Looking for some volunteer opportunities? Our next Beach Cleanup is this Saturday Oct. 17th from 9:30 to 10:30 at Belmont Shores! The following week is National Chemistry Week and we are celebrating with our Periodic Table Cupcake Sale, Wednesday Oct. 21 from 12-3pm! Every semester we offer Periodic-Table-themed Cupcakes to students, faculty, and friends. If you'd like to help out in baking, setting up, or selling, let us know via email! We will supply cupcake baking supplies for those who would like to help out. Also look out for an email regarding our ‘National Chemistry Week’ booth where we will be demonstrating a few interesting experiments, giving away chemistry goodies and nanomole stuffed animals! We will send out a doodle for volunteers for the booth. This Tuesday, October 13th at 3:30pm in HSCI 102 marks our 4th General Meeting of the semester! We will have a presentation about Biotechnology graduate school programs with KGI (Keck Graduate Institute) from 3:30-4:30pm. Following the presentation we will meet up at the bowling alley in the USU from 4:30-5:30pm for some FREE bowling with friends and FREE pizza! Remember, the more events you attend the more points you accumulate towards winning a $200 gift card or other prizes at the end of the semester ;)
Our next tour is at the Scripps Research Institute and UCSD on Friday, October 23rd. Email us to join our carpool! Excited for Halloween? ‘Cause we are! We're halfway through the semester-- here's a quick recap!
At our first three General Meetings, we got to hear some wonderful stories about many different aspects of chemistry! First we had Dr. Krishna Kallury's presentation highlighting "Food Chemistry and its Role in the Science of Food." During our second meeting, Ezra Pryor discussed Cannabis Chemistry and his mission to establish a new branch within the American Chemical Society supporting it. Then we had one of our very own, Dr. Tom J. Maricich, discuss his journey with, "The Evolution of a Research Career." Thank you so much to our speakers for sharing their stories and to all who attended! We kicked off the semester with a BBQ at Rynerson Park. The following week we toured to Grifols Biological, Inc. and got suited up to learn about plasma preparation and distribution. Just last week we got to tour the Orange County Sanitation District and learn all about the chemistry involved behind the scenes of how water gets recycled, and how our waste generates enough methane to power the entire process! A side product of these reactions is hydrogen gas -- hydrogen fueled cars are able to fill up right outside the OCSD, oh so cool. We had our first beach cleanup of the year down at Belmont Shores last month-- join us for our next Beach Cleanup this Saturday Oct. 17th! Send us an email if you're interested!
